Father to the Fatherless

Written in my Journal on 8.5.11:

Last night received a late night frantic phone call from one of the girls in my middle school small group. She had been trying out what I recommended during last week’s small group:  being quiet and listening to God at some point in the day.

She was scared and confused when she called saying that God was just silent and then she heart only one word:  Love.

She was confused with what to do with that.  I assured her that there was nothing to be
afraid of and to always take what you think you hear God saying back to the
Bible and make sure that it lines up. She couldn’t find her Bible anywhere and was looking everywhere for it.  No Bible in sight, so I offered to send her some verses on love the next day via email.

About 30 minutes later, I received this message:

“Mrs. Kelly!!!!  In my Bible, the first page about love was Psalm 68:5 “God is a father to the fatherless”!!! Can you believe that?!????!!!  Then Romans 8:14-16.”

Amazing. Last night, I was blown away that God would speak to her so clearly and so specifically. This is why:  Her father abandoned her when she was just a baby and she has lived her young life with this vacancy in her heart.  Just recently, she spoke to her earthly father for the first time, but God was letting her know His heart toward her.

As I ponder this morning, I am encouraged that Naiya
receives the same promise from our Heavenly Father, just as we all do.

Better go read the Romans verses.  I know they were for her, but maybe it was
meant for me too and God used her to remind me.

Romans 8:14-16

New International Version (NIV)

14 For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of
God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that
you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your
adoption to sonship.[a] And by him we cry, “Abba,[b] Father.” 16 The Spirit himself
testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

Be still and know that I am God.

He’s speaking, are you taking the time to listen?
